I almost always don't really like growling. That song, however, is really good and I didn't mind the growling in it. But mostly I really don't care for it.
And to keep the stupid post train moving. Hey, did you guys hear menthro is fat?

it takes more skill to growl than to rap or be a pop artist.

It doesn't take more skill to to growl then it does to rap. Not gangster rap, but freestyle on the spot rap. That is probably way more skillful than growling. Pop artistry sucks but we all know that.

Tribble hit on one of my favorite thing ever in that post. Freestyle rapping is one of the coolest things to see whether you're into it or not. Not to mention it's ridiculously difficult (trust me...I know). To just watch a guy sit and essentially make up a song on the spot is mind blowing (watching the video below will not give you the full effect, but still). www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-2kk6s1axkThat said, as much as I don't love the sound of growling or screaming in music, it very much is a skill. The vocal range it takes to do it is impressive in itself, and to do it well and not destroy your voice requires a lot of unique and specific training.

I was referring to vocal skill, not thought... I thought that was implied given my initial post. ANYONE can make themselves SOUND like a rapper. The same cannot be said for growling

IMO, unless you measure skill by how much physical strain is put on your vocal cords, then growling is much harder to do. But I still think that when you compare growling by itself to rapping as a whole, it takes more skill to rap. It's easy to sound like a rapper I guess, but to sound like a good rapper takes a lot of practice. To be able to keep a steady flow with your words.
But if I ended my argument there I would chastised by people for saying that being a rock/metal/whatever singer is easier than being a rapper. Which I didn't say at all. But unless I clarify I can almost guarantee would have happened. I think it takes much more skill to be a good rock/metal/whatever singer (for the most part) than it does to rap. While rappers need to keep a steady flow, they really don't have to worry to much about pitch, and don't have to hit a wide variety of notes and never really hold notes. In fact, most rappers aren't really expected to sound a certain way at all. While to be a rock/whatever singer you have to sound a tertian way to fit your respective genre. You have to hold notes, and hit a variety of notes as well.
So when comparing just growling to rapping as a whole, it's harder to rap. But when comparing rapping as a whole, to being a rock/metal/whatever else singer, it's much harder to do the latter. And for those singers who can both growl (which again I still do think requires talent to do well) and sing very well do deserve a lot of respect.
