8800 Ultra is the newest, but its fucking expensive, GTX is the next step down, at least 500 there, then the GTS, less than 500, and finally GT which is the cheapest. In regards to 8800, 8600, and 8500, copmared to onboard graphics they're respectivley, 27x, 13x, 5x performance speed. The 8800 will hold you off for a long time since it's obviously much faster than the others. Of course, don't touch the 7000 series if your looking for new and high quality(7900 SLI'd = 8800 GTX). Of course this whole purchase will be completely wasted if you don't have at least 2Gigs of RAM and a Core 2.
To sum it up, I would only get the 8800 if your getting a new card, and GTS or better. Otherwise, you shouldn't even bother because the GT is quickly becoming outdated.
